Ben’s First Watercolor-And-Ink Added to the Paintings Section

In what was an otherwise-dismal day for design here, I finally got over my fear of watercolors and took a plunge into unknown territory. The result? I think I found a new favorite illustration method!

Based on a photograph by Christopher Griffith, media and color choices inspired by Ralph Bakshi’s “Wizards.” I sketched the Tyrannosaurus Rex skull onto some old white copy paper, splashed down some moderately diluted Prang watercolors using cheap nylon plastic brushes from Wal-Mart, and then picked up the line art again with my set of Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph pens armed with India ink. I know, I know: breaking all the rules of watercolor.

That would be most of the reason why I’ve never seriously used watercolors before: too many restrictions (and not enough control). Set aside the restrictrions, submit to a little loss of control over the media, and the outcome is one that pleases me. Just a minor personal success story, at the hands of a small adventure I took this evening.

And who doesn’t like dinosaurs, right?
