This was my first time putting a genuine effort into photographing lightning. Only one of every ten pictures I took actually caught some lightning in the frame, but then again, I was on continuous-shoot mode.
The storm was so intense and widespread, I’ve never seen as much lightning as this all at one time.
The sky darkened with clouds around 7PM, as far as the eye could see in every direction, as seen from the ground in The Avenues Mall area.
By 10:30PM, when these photos were actually snapped, lightning and corresponding thunder was constant. There was almost never a break between strikes.
All of these were taken from the relative safety of my 2nd-story balcony, looking across a commons and over the top of the building behind mine.
CHDK didn’t come into play (there’s a script for it specialized in capturing lightning strikes, but I’ve had trouble with it before). I’m just using manual focus, range set to infinity, flash off, white balance dropped to the minimum, exposure time set to 2 seconds, and holding down the shutter button on continuous shot mode.
The thunder kept going for another couple hours afterward.
